Leadership Track
King's University
Through a partnership with Jack Hayford's, The King's University, students can now receive credit for the classes and events that they will be participating in. In order to receive credit for these classes and events, they need to complete a King's application, and a FAFSA form (available online at www.kingscollege.edu). The cost to receive credit is above and beyond the normal LEADERSHIP track tuition costs. However, The King's University is generously providing their tuition at 50% off their normal rate. Students who choose to receive credit will be considered full-time students each quarter. The number of credits the students will be taking has not been finalized, but the cost is around $100 per credit hour. For insurance/tax purposes, students who choose to receive college credit for the classes/events will be considered full-time and can remain on their parents insurance. For further questions regarding The King's University and DLA partnership, please contact Tyrel Koenes at tkoenes@newlifechurch.org or call 719-268-8282..

CORE Leadership Opportunities
As a second year in the LEADERSHIP track, a lot of their focus is on implementing the tools and lessons learned from their first year. Therefore, one morning per week is designated for CORE to creatively implement and grow into their personal leadership style. This will be a time for CORE to preach, teach, and lead in whatever capacity they desire to. All first years will attend this training lead by CORE.
Ministry Tribes
This is local church student ministry training time. One of the goals of DLA is to raise up leaders that desire to give their lives to serving a generation within the local church. Therefore, we want to give the LEADERSHIP Track students the opportunity to learn from practitioners. Ministry Tribes are about 12 hours during the week where students will be assigned to one ministry: theMILL, _DSM, Desperation Conference, Events, DLA, the Furnace, and Media. CORE will function as the leaders of these tribes.
Desperation Mobilization
Students will spend an hour and a half each week calling and connecting with various youth pastors across the country to share the vision and mission of Desperation. This will be a time where students get to pray with and minister to different pastors in the ministry as well as inform them about our Desperation conferences.
The MILL
College/twenty-something’s, led by Pastor Aaron Stern, is a gathering place where a dynamic mix of over 1,000 young people engage in heartfelt worship, compelling teaching, and fervent prayer. Each LEADERSHIP track student will attend and serve at this meeting.

Breaks and Vacation Weekends
There are multiple breaks in the program that allows students to go home. Please schedule any and all vacation plans around these breaks and weekends. Many times students will travel home with different people and turn these breaks and weekends into short road-trips with their friends. These become really fun times for the students to connect with each other and with their families throughout the year.
Recreation
Rest and recreational Weeks are scheduled in to rest and have fun! The Rocky Mountains are our backyard, therefore, we seize every season to make Colorado our playground. Throughout the year, we may do various activities like going snowboarding/skiing, snowmobiling, sledding, and visiting the natural hot springs here. During the warmer months we may go camping, jet skiing & waterskiing, white water rafting, paintballing, and barbeque days at the park. Our staff are big sports fans too so we'll definitely take trips up to see the Denver Nuggets basketball and Colorado Rockies baseball!
Desperation Blitz
For a week, students will pair up and go 2-by-2 to different local churches across Colorado. Traveling around the region, students will connect with youth pastors to spread the mission and vision of Desperation.
Tuition
LEADERSHIP Track Tuition is $5,900.
This amount covers the following: All room and board through our home sponsor system, classes and books, apparel, local, national, and overseas mission’s trips, Desperation Tours, and all events and activities.
This amount does NOT include: Health and auto insurance, gasoline, cell phone bill, and toiletries.
If accepted, a non-refundable pre-registration fee of $300 is due two weeks after your interview and acceptance process and the remaining balance of $5,600 is due at orientation on September 4, 2011. At this time there are no payment plans available however there is a limited amount of scholarship funds. For more information concerning the DLA scholarship, please contact tkoenes@newlifechurch.org to see if you qualify to apply.
Please do not arrive at orientation without your full tuition.
If two weeks prior to orientation you are struggling to have all of your tuition, please give our directors a call at 719-268-8282. Due to the schedule of the LEADERSHIP Track, there is not an opportunity to have an outside job. Thus, it is strongly recommended that you have a sufficient source of funds and no outstanding debts. We recommend around $100-$125 per month for car insurance, gas, cell phone, and extra spending.
Raising Support
We have seen incredible success with the following formulas and ideas. However, those that succeed with this are those that actually DO IT!
Write out a budget:
1. Include $5,900 tuition + necessary funds needed each month for personal expenses (recommended: $100-$125 per month / $1,000-$1,250 per year)
2. Set a goal: Determine the total funds you will have from your job and/or parental support, and subtract that from the total. This is how much money you will need to raise. Set this amount as your goal and set a strategy to reach that goal.
Example:
$5,900 + $1,000 = $6,900
$6,900 - (job + parental support) = YOUR GOAL AMOUNT (Amount you need to raise)
Get a strategy:
1. Make a list of individuals and churches with which you can share your vision and call.
- a. Ideas for contacts:
- b. Your church missions committee
- c. The church where you grew up
- d. Friends and acquaintances at old churches
- e. People at your work place (current and summer)
- f. Acquaintances outside your normal church circles (neighbors, etc.)
- g. Friends involved in other Christian groups and ministries (FCA...)
- h. Friends and contacts of your parents
- i. Relatives (parents and grandparents)
- j. Christian contacts (teachers, administrators, staff)
- k. Christian parents of your friends
- l. Your close friends
2. Prioritize your list into your "Top 10," Second 10, Third 10 and so on.
3. Those "Top 10" donors will probably provide two-thirds of your financial support.
4. Prayerfully individualize your fund-raising appeals.
- a. Ask appropriately.
- b. Don't be afraid to ask for large gifts of money.
- c. Decide the best ways to contact each person on your top 10 list and what gift range you would like to ask them to consider giving.
Possible ways to contact people:
- Face-to-face funding presentations
- Phone call followed with an information letter and response card and envelope
- Fund-raising letter with an information sheet and response card and envelope, followed up by a phone call if they do not get back to you in time
- Church presentation
- Other creative options such as a car wash
5. Pray, and then contact each person on your "Top 10" list. Set yourself a deadline to get this done.
6. Follow up with them as planned
7. Repeat steps 1-6 for your second 10
. . . Continue steps 1-6 with your third 10, fourth 10, etc. until you reach 100% of your fund raising goal!
Requirements
Health Insurance
All students must have health insurance for the duration of the academy. Students may remain on their parent’s health insurance or have an individual policy. We have a letter we can send you for your insurance company providing the information that they are in a full time academy. This will suffice for some insurance companies, but not all. DLA students are not considered full time students in an accredited institution unless they are taking The King’s University credit. If the student plans to receive credit for their classes, then students can remain on their parent’s policy. For more information on receiving college credit, click here If the student needs to purchase an individual policy, Desperation has worked out special rates with Carl Chavez at Preferred Insurance (719) 599-7989.
Offices
Students will be given a small office space to carry out their ministry placement. If a phone and network terminal is needed for the ministry placement, one will be given.
Laptops
Students are required to bring laptop computers to the LEADERSHIP Track in order to carry out assignments and ministry placement tasks.
Cell Phones
Students are required to have a cell phone. Text messaging is required.
Toiletries
Students are required to provide their own toiletries for their time in the academy.
Gas
Students are required to provide their own fuel. If carpooling with another student, they are required to help cover other student’s expenses.
Car and Auto Insurance
Students are required to have a vehicle in good working order covered by insurance while in the academy.
Housing
Home Sponsors are an integral part of the DLA family and will be your home away from home. They provide you with an avenue for friendship, spiritual guidance and support beyond the program.
Before becoming a Home Sponsor, families must submit a written application, complete a background check and have an in-home interview. This process is covered in prayer as we make every effort to place you with a family that will be a blessing.
Home Sponsors provide you with your own bedroom (including bed linens and towels), meals, laundry supplies, and lots of encouragement and support. Your responsibilities include keeping your room clean at all times, observing household rules, doing your laundry in a timely manner and providing for your personal toiletry items. For more info about home sponsors click here.
